Force-fed geese – Foie gras

Fat liver (Foie gras) is the liver of force-fed ducks and geese. Foie gras is a well-known luxury dish in French cuisine and is consumed worldwide. France is by far the world’s largest producer of fat liver, Hungary is the second one. Here is a question that is easy to answer: Are you against the force-feeding of animals? Fat liver production is banned in fourteen European countries – Denmark, Germany, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Ireland and Great Britain - because of the possible health consequences of the feeding process. My second question is: Would you like to taste foie gras? All countries listed above continue to import fat liver even after banning its poduction.

Good questions. I used to really want to try Foie Gras until I found out that they force feed the duck or geese. I think it is cruel to do that to an animal and wish they could figure out another way to feed the animal.

Terrible.. people should have more hearts on the animals. Hope your writing could bring some awareness to people.

I also wish they found another way, cj harley. Migratory birds have a capacity for weight gain when overfed - this was discovered in ancient Egypt according to a Wikipedia article. I imagine the answer of modern science to this would be genetic modification...

I too abhor the way it's produced .. in fact I'm now vegetarian, more or less.

But .... I have a confession to make!

I love the taste! I'm not encouraging anyone ... but honestly it is the most exquisite taste. I really regret trying it because whenever it's on the menu I am SO TEMPTED! Oh well!

Ian, I appreciate your frankness. I've never tasted it, but I'm sure there is a good reason why it is a world famous delicacy.

Like cj harley is saying; I used to want to try it, but reading about the horrible ways they treat the animals makes me reconsider. Normally, I would taste whatever food is presented to me (as long as it's not slimy and comes from the ocean), but I actually think I have to take a rain check on this one.
