How does your government perform in the ongoing global crisis?

Are you satisfied with the suggestions the political elite in your country has to offer? Do they fill you with confidence or do they discourage you? It is not easy for an ordinary citizen like me to assess how critical the situation is. What I know is that we are in trouble. But how deep? I hear the word 'crisis' every day and it starts loosing its meaning - like the images of massacres and car bomb explosions on the news - I am getting used to it. At the same time, I keep reminding myself to stay alert because what is happening now is likely to change our future. I believe the Hungarian politicians fail the people they are entrusted to represent. There is no chance in our country that the opposition party (Fidesz, ex-PM Viktor Orbán) and the socialists (MSZP, PM Ferenc Gyurcsány) set aside own agendas and unite their political power for the good of the nation. They can afford to go down the good old path putting political survival ahead of common interests because Hungary is the home of no consequences. Of course, consequences will follow and the price the people pay will be high, maybe higher than ever... we will know soon enough.

It's funny how things look the same even when we're a few thousand km apart.

At first, I visited your blog because I like things about Hungary (a country I would like to visit someday), but I became a Follower when I saw that it's going to be interesting to discuss things that affect both of our countries. I'm from Portugal, btw

As for your post, I strongly believe that political agenda will always lead the way, very often against national needs and sometimes even againsts its interests.

But how deep is this crisis going to be? I think it will go very deep, mainly due to one reason: this is not a standard crisis, this is not one of those recessions/depressions most experts like to describe as a cyclical happening, IMHO.

If you look at history, you'll see various signs of what could become the end of a civilization (the so called western world) or at least the downsizing of it to a lesser status.

People more and more have access to information (cultural, economical, etc, etc, etc) but more and more you see people misinformed, almost ignorant, about what reality is. People are alienated.

For so many centuries we have had the rise and fall of nations and empires; why wouldn't our global empire (of western domination) end one day?

I'd like to believe there are politicians who are capable of understanding that some goals can only be achieved when all parties unite. It may sound naive, but I just don't feel like dismissing the possibility...Besides, there are good examples, like the economic miracle of Ireland. It could not have transformed into one of the wealthiest countries of Western Europe from one of the poorest without political ceasefire and agreement on certain key matters.

Let’s hope the present storm and all its secondary long term effects will bring about positive
changes at one point. Fore example, people in general might become more environmentally conscious than before. Many economies contract and this causes consumer societies to restrain the horses. We have already realized we are destroying our natural resources on this planet, now we may be forced not only to agree with, but to follow the new measures, change lifestyle.

Will Western domination end one day? There is a chance it will, but what will follow then? I’d like to sleep well tonight so I’d rather not think about it now Welcome to the site and thanks for all your valuable comments!
